GetResponse and AWeber are easily two of the best email marketing services that you can use to start sending email newsletters. Everyone says that email marketing is vital for your business. But, how do you choose the right platform? Here’s a GetResponse vs AWeber comparison review to help you make an informed decision.
Both companies were launched in 1998. Since then, each company has managed to keep a massive list of happy and satisfied customers and they have accounted for the increase in sales & conversions for countless companies and business owners.

In order to keep this GetResponse vs AWeber comparison short, I’ve gathered a list of some noteworthy features that both services offer.
Here is what you can expect to find on both platforms:

- Hundreds of free newsletter templates with different layouts. A vast majority of the templates are responsive across multiple devices.
- Full access to the popular autoresponder tool that allows you to send automated newsletters to your subscribers.
- The ability to track the performance of your email campaigns – track how many subscribers open your emails, click on the links, or how many people unsubscribe from your newsletters.
- RSS to email capability. Announces your blog posts automatically via email and social media.
- An easy to use email builder to create professional newsletters without having to touch any coding.
- The ability to integrate with third-party tools and websites.
After sending a few newsletters, you’ll notice how important design really is. You work so hard to get your subscribers to open your email; don’t let a crappy design ruin it.
GetResponse offers a little over 500 newsletter templates in multiple industry categories. All of their templates can be edited using their easy to use drag-and-drop editor.

AWeber offers over 700 newsletter templates. Like their competitor, they use a drag-and-drop editor that allows you to customize the look of your templates.

It’s important to note that the templates featured on both platforms are responsive across multiple devices (smartphones, tablets, etc.).
When it comes to templates and design, I think AWeber does a better job. Their templates are professional and easier to work with. But, I guess this is a user preference kind of thing.
IMPORTING SUBSCRIBERS & DATA
Up until recently, AWeber required your subscribers to reconfirm the opt-in. This caused a problem for a lot of marketers to lose some of their subscribers when switching to AWeber.
Fortunately, this has changed.
Both GetResponse and AWeber allow you to import subscribers and other data to your account without having them reconfirm. However, the option to have your subscribers reconfirm their opt-in can be turned on at your discretion (I highly advise you keep it off).
Every time you import subscribers into your GetResponse account, their compliance team will review the list before it’s added to your list.
AWeber allows you to import up to 10,000 subscribers each month. If you cross the threshold, AWeber will do a manual review of your account.
Third party integrations is arguably one area that AWeber has an advantage over GetResponse. While both services offer an extensive list of third party applications and integrations, AWeber offers more “out of the box” integrations.
GetResponse involves you setting up a Zapier account in order to make certain integrations work with your GetResponse account.
While this isn’t something overly complicated, I feel that a lot of users will like the flawless integrations that AWeber offers.
It’s important to note that segmenting your subscriber list is different than split testing. Segmenting allows you to split up your subscribers that share the same interests into segmented groups.
In other words, segmenting your emails means that you’ll be sending the right email to each subscriber.
At this time, I think both are even in this category.
Split testing is a great tool to have as it allows you to try out different versions of your newsletters. By split testing, you’re able to see which version of your newsletter performs the best.
GetResponse has a slight advantage over AWeber when it comes to split testing (or A/B testing). For example, GetResponse allows you to create and test up to five different variants compared to AWeber’s four.
Both GetResponse and AWeber allow you to split test your content, subject line, from field, the day of the week, and so on. Other email marketing services restrict what you can split test.
LANDING PAGE CREATOR
Another area where GetResponse excels is their landing page creator. Landing pages or “squeeze pages” are web pages designed specifically to capture data/leads. Generally, I would recommend using a landing page over a sign up form to capture subscribers mainly because landing pages, if created properly, don’t have any distracting factors.
GetResponse offers a landing page creator that utilizes a drag and drop editor that doesn’t require any coding or technical knowledge. It also comes with a little over 100 templates for your landing pages. However, their basic landing page creation allows you to create one landing page and it’s limited to 1,000 visitors per month.
They do offer a premium landing page creator for about $18/month that doesn’t have any restrictions.
Ultimately, you can do similar things on AWeber, but it’s just not as straightforward as with GetResponse. AWeber doesn’t have a built-in landing page creator. For example, you’d have to integrate with an app like Instapage or OptimizePress to be able to create landing pages.
However, this is going to be more expensive than purchasing a premium landing page creator on GetResponse.
EMAIL DELIVERABILITY RATES & SPAM CHECKER
GetResponse guarantees an email deliverability rate of 99% whereas AWeber offers a 98% email deliverability rate. You can’t take much away from either platform in regards to deliverability rates.
As for spam checks, both GetResponse and AWeber do an excellent job at examining your newsletters to ensure it passes all spam checks. Both utilize Spam Assassin for examining your content and giving you a spam score.
Anything below a spam score of five is going to be good, although you’d want to get as close to zero as you could.
SEND TIME OPTIMIZATION
If you want to get the most out of your newsletters, you’re going to love the new “intelligent send time optimization” feature that’s available on GetResponse. Basically, this feature goes through your subscriber list, checks their interacting habits, and sends your newsletters at a time that it’ll most likely be opened.
If everything is set up properly, you can improve your open rates by 23% and your click rates by up to 20%.
Here’s what happened when I tested this feature on one of my campaigns:
- My open rates improved by an average of 16%.
- My click rates improved by about 14%.
This feature is not yet available on AWeber nor could you find something similar to this in their integrations section.
Either road you take, support is going to be reliable, top notch and very comprehensive. Both services offer support via live chat, email ticketing and phone.
However, GetResponse has an edge over AWeber when it comes to live chat availability. GetResponse offers 24/7 live chat support during business days whereas AWeber’s live chat support is limited to 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends.
On top of their human customer support, both services have an extensive knowledgebase featuring helpful guides and video tutorials.
GETRESPONSE PRICING VS AWEBER PRICING
If you’re making your decision solely on price, GetResponse is generally cheaper than AWeber. It’s important to note that GetResponse offers an 18% discount on all annual plans.
Here is the pricing structure for GetResponse:
The cheapest plan (costing $15/month) allows you to send unlimited emails to 1,000 subscribers. You can also get a custom quote if your list is larger than 100,000 subscribers.
How to cancel your GetResponse account: Go to your GetResponse account, click on billing, and then scroll down and click on “cancel my subscription”. You have to contact their customer service to cancel your free trial.
AWeber doesn’t offer a discount. Here is the pricing structure for AWeber:
Their cheapest plan ($19/month) allows you to send unlimited emails to 500 subscribers. You’ll need to request a quote if your list is larger than 25,000 subscribers. I find the idea of having to call them to request a quote for over 25,000 subscribers inconvenient.
How to cancel your AWeber account: Go to my account, click on billing, and then click on “close my account” right below your credit card information.
VERDICT – WHICH EMAIL MARKETING SERVICE IS BETTER?
Both GetResponse and AWeber provide a solid email marketing service that enables you to create email campaigns and send email newsletters. Even if you’re not technically minded, you shouldn’t have a problem using either platform.
Since the two services are similarly priced and offer similar tools, it’s hard to declare a winner.
From my personal experience, GetResponse gave me a better overall value, mainly because:
- You can sign up for their free trial without entering your credit card information.
- It’s more competitively priced as you work your way up to their higher tiered plans.
- They give you an 18% discount for prepaying on an annual basis.
- You get access to their built-in landing page builder/editor.
- Their split-testing options are more comprehensive than what you would find on AWeber.
- Over 350,000 individuals and businesses trust GetResponse for their email marketing needs (compared to AWeber’s 120,000).
- Their “intelligent send time optimization” feature tells you the best time to send your newsletters. This can increase your email open and click through rates by 23%.
The main reasons I would choose AWeber over GetResponse are their template options and flawless integrations with certain tools. AWeber’s templates are somewhat more attractive and easier to work with.
