Creating an online business is something everyone wants to do. With the right ecommerce software, creating and running an online store is going to be a breeze. Since you are reading this CoreCommerce review, I am guessing that you have narrowed the choice down to using their shopping cart.
Established in 2001, CoreCommerce is a fairly older name in ecommerce. However, even with over ten years in business, the shopping cart is used by 3,000 online stores. This is probably due to Bigcommerce and Shopify being the more popular choices.
WHO IS CORECOMMERCE GOOD FOR?
Their business model and shopping cart is good for small and medium online stores. I do not see CoreCommerce being a good choice for larger online stores as storage space is limited. Adding multiple product images and other store files will quickly exceed their storage limits.
CORECOMMERCE REVIEW – PLANS AND PRICING
CoreCommerce is not the cheapest shopping cart, but I feel that it is competitively priced. At the time of this review, CoreCommerce has four plans ranging from $39.99/month all the way to $199.99/month (see all plans here).
For $39.99/month, you get a complete shopping cart with two gigabyte of bandwidth, a gigabyte of storage space and the ability to sell 150 products. As you go up the plan tiers, these limits increase. Unlimited products and bandwidth is included with the most expensive plan. A complete 15 day free trial without any commitments is available to new customers.
CORECOMMERCE REVIEW – 5 PROS OF CORECOMMERCE
After spending a lot of time researching and actually using CoreCommerce to build online stores, here is what I found to be the pros:
1) NO TRANSACTION FEES:
Any shopping cart comparison chart will show us that there are only a handful of carts that do not charge any transaction fees. Transaction fees hike up the overall cost and may reduce profit margins.
Personally, I hate transaction fees and find them very annoying. If I am going to pay to use a shopping cart, why do I have to pay transaction fees? When I am paying for transaction fees, I feel that I am no longer in full control of my business.
2) ADVANCED MARKETING FEATURES:
In order to stay in business and be successful, new businesses need a big marketing push. The array of marketing features included with CoreCommerce will benefit all online stores, especially the newer shops.
Some of the marketing features include an affiliate program, refer a friend, product reviews, reward points, built in email marketing and newsletters, gift registry, Google Trusted Stores and several upselling tools.
3) THEME SELECTION:
Store design is the first thing a potential customer sees. If the design is outdated and lacks a clean touch, I can guarantee that shoppers will leave before making a purchase.
CoreCommerce understands that design matters. With over 100 responsive store themes, there is going to be something special for every online store. In addition, all of the themes can be edited using HTML and CSS. Also, hundreds of stylish buttons classes are available as well.
Here is my take on this. The ability to edit themes is a huge benefit. With minor editing, you can create a custom store look.
4) FLEXIBLE SHIPPING OPTIONS:
CoreCommerce has real-time shipping rates from multiple carriers such as UPS, USPS, FedEx, DHL, Australia Post and others. Almost all online stores are offering free shipping so this is going to be pro for those that are still charging for shipping.
5) CORECOMMERCE DOES SECURITY WELL:
The day you process your first payment, you will learn the true importance of protecting customer information. Since CoreCommerce is a hosted shopping cart, they have to be in compliance with all of the regulations. However, this does not mean that the store owner can just sit around and do nothing.
The internet is full of hackers, thieves and scammers. Do not let your customers be the next victims. Thankfully, CoreCommerce has several security measures set in place to protect your store and data. These tools include:
- Free shared SSL certificate
- Firewall protection
- Re-Captcha image verification
- Blocking emails and IP addresses
- Access to FTP and MX records
CORECOMMERCE REVIEW – 2 CONS OF CORECOMMERCE
Here is what I found to be the cons and drawbacks of creating an online store with CoreCommerce:
1) LIMITED STORAGE SPACE:
I am not sure how big of a con this really is. It all depends on the amount of images you plan on adding to each product. However, if done properly, images can be reduced to maximize the store space available.
If I had to guess, I would say that small and medium stores will not have an issue with the available storage space. It will be more of an issue for larger online stores.
2) CORECOMMERCE DOES NOT INTEGRATE WELL:
When compared to Bigcommerce and Shopify, CoreCommerce does not integrate well with third-party applications nor does it have a big selection. It is able to integrate with some basic tools like email marketing and newsletters.
This is going to be an issue when you find yourself looking for more features that are not built into the shopping cart. However, CoreCommerce does a good job of updating the shopping cart and releasing new features.
CORECOMMERCE REVIEW – SUPPORT AND RESOURCES
If you are setting up a store on your own and without a developer, you will need technical support at some point. I have been building stores for years and I still do not know everything.
Thankfully, CoreCommerce has a 24/7 technical support via live chat, phone and email ticketing. On top of the traditional human support, they have a support page filled with tutorials and frequently asked questions.
Since they have a fairly low customer base, support requests are answered very quickly. I would like to see if their response times are going to remain the same as their shopping cart grows and expands.
Prior to writing this CoreCommerce review, I researched and tested dozens of shopping carts – most in which I use on a daily basis. For those that do not find CoreCommerce appealing, here are two alternatives that are worth looking at:
Bigcommerce – I am sure everyone knows about Bigcommerce. Their shopping cart is versatile, has rich features and offers competitive pricing. If you did not like CoreCommerce, you will enjoy working with Bigcommerce. Their plans are also a little cheaper, starting at $29.95/month (see all plans here).
3dcart – Their shopping cart is not as popular as the one above, but almost it is almost as good. 3dcart has an array of marketing features and a solid support structure, making them a good choice for ecommerce. Plans start at $19.99/month (see all plans here).
CORECOMMERCE REVIEW – DO I RECOMMEND CORECOMMERCE?
CoreCommerce is not a perfect solution – I do not think a perfect solution exists. While I think they can improve a few things, I do believe CoreCommerce is a good shopping cart for an ecommerce store.
If you want a shopping cart that does just about everything with minor flaws, I say go with CoreCommerce. However, if you tried the free trial and were not impressed, then go with one of the CoreCommerce alternatives I listed above.
I will end this review by saying that the shopping cart platform being used is just as important as having the right products to sell.
