A Small Orange is one of my favorite web hosting companies. There is just something about ASO that draws me in – I just cannot find out what. The web hosts takes care of its customers, offers reliable hosting servers and has competitive web hosting pricing. I thought I could tell you more about this web host by writing an unbiased A Small Orange review.
For the readers that do not have time to read my A Small Orange pros and cons, you can go to A Small Orange to learn more about their web hosting.
WHO IS A SMALL ORANGE GOOD FOR?
Since A Small Orange has both basic and advanced web hosting, almost every website is going to be a good fit here. The only thing that can potentially draw larger websites away from A Small Orange is the limited bandwidth.
Personally, I think the whole idea of offering “unlimited bandwidth” is a marketing tactic that is being used to as a marketing tactic. There is no such thing as unlimited. Every single web host, offering unlimited features or not, will not tolerate any websites that abuse any of those features. Anyways, that is just my quick take on that.
A SMALL ORANGE REVIEW – PLANS AND PRICING
Since shared web hosting is what most are going to start with, I am going to keep this section more focused towards shared hosting. Shared web hosting plans start at $35/year, which is equivalent to roughly $2.92/month. The three other shared plans can be paid on a month to month basis (see all plans here).
The cheapest plan offers 5 GB of bandwidth, 500 MB of storage and the ability to host one website. Obviously, these increase as you upgrade between plans. With the exception of the cheapest plan, A Small Orange offers a 17% discount on all other shared hosting plans, including a free domain name.
Here are the other types of web hosting ASO offers:
- Business web hosting starting at $20/month.
- Reseller web hosting starting at $15/month.
- Cloud VPS hosting starting at $20/month.
- Dedicated servers starting at $125/month.
- Clementine managed hosting starting at $45/month.
A SMALL ORANGE REVIEW – 6 PROS OF HOSTING WITH A SMALL ORANGE
I had the opportunity to work with A Small Orange on multiple occasions. Here is what I found to be the pros of hosting a website with A Small Orange:
1) FREE DOMAIN NAME:
With the exception of the cheapest plan, A Small Orange offers a free domain name with all other shared hosting plans. This will save you roughly $15/year. Also, having web hosting and a domain name with the same company is convenient and there is no need to mess with nameservers.
However, I would not go with a web host simply because you have other services there. For example, I would purchase a domain name with GoDaddy, but I would never host a website there.
2) CPANEL INTERFACE:
Whoever says that all of the hosting control panels are the same is mistaken and has lost their mind. We all know that cPanel is the hosting control panel of choice.
As you get more in-depth with WordPress and other applications, the more you will be accessing the hosting control panel. This is when you will realize that the control panel matters. Basically, cPanel is able to organize all of the hosting functions in one centralized location – making it more convenient and user-friendly.
3) WEEBLY SITE BUILDER:
Each shared hosting plan gives you access to the famous Weebly Site Builder, good for one website. For the ones that are not familiar, Weebly has an easy to use drag-and-drop editor for building stylish websites. While I think this is a big pro of using A Small Orange, it will not be beneficial for users that are going to use WordPress and Joomla. Users that are building websites from scratch will see a big benefit out of this free tool.
4) BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU RATING:
Having an A rating with the BBB might not seem like a big deal. Checking the Better Business Bureau page before purchasing a product or service from a specific company is a good habit to have as it allows you to see actual customer reported problems.
However, satisfied customers will never visit a website like the Better Business Bureau to write a positive review.
5) UPTIME GUARANTEE:
A Small Orange fulfills the basic duty of every web host by offering an uptime guarantee of 99.9%. This is not something that they just promise; it is something that they stand behind.
6) 90 DAY RETURN POLICY:
A Small Orange allows you to try their web hosting for a full 90 days without any obligations. If you are not satisfied for any reason, cancel the service within ninety days and receive a full refund.
Even if you cancel after the ninety day period, you will receive a prorated refund. When compared to other web hosting companies, the return policy offered by A Small Orange is very lengthy and competitive.
A SMALL ORANGE REVIEW – 2 CONS OF HOSTING WITH A SMALL ORANGE
I am sure that you know that there is not a web host out there that is completely perfect. Everything can always be improved. Anyways, here is what I found to be the cons of A Small Orange:
1) NO UNLIMITED BANDWIDTH:
This con is going to make me sound hypocritical. While I think unlimited bandwidth is a big myth, I understand that a lot of users will like having it.
I guess having unlimited bandwidth makes users feel more comfortable as they do not have to worry about any limits per say. However, as soon as you start abusing hosting servers, you will learn that unlimited bandwidth does not exist.
2) OWNED BY EIG:
A Small Orange is owned by Endurance International Group (or EIG). This major company is known for acquiring popular web hosting companies and messing up their reputation. It is common for EIG to put a lot of websites on the same servers – impacting their performance.
As of right now, A Small Orange is the only EIG-owned company that is independent from the rest. In other words, you do not have worry about slow hosting servers.
A SMALL ORANGE REVIEW – CUSTOMER SUPPORT
This is one area where A Small Orange excels while other web hosts fail. A Small Orange has a 24/7 customer support via live chat, phone and traditional email ticketing. Any customer will tell you that their technical support is beyond amazing.
On top of having human support available throughout the day and night, A Small Orange has other support resources such as tutorials and documents.
A SMALL ORANGE ALTERNATIVES
If you feel that A Small Orange is not the best web host for your website needs, here are some alternatives for shared hosting and managed WordPress hosting:
SiteGround – This web host is easily the best provider of shared web hosting. It has a lot of the features that are offered through A Small Orange. Their shared hosting plans start at $3.95/month.
WP Engine – If you are looking for managed WordPress hosting, WP Engine is definitely worth mentioning and looking into. Your WordPress website is going to be super-fast without any performance boosting plugins. Plans start at $29/month.
A SMALL ORANGE REVIEW – DO I RECOMMEND A SMALL ORANGE?
In conclusion, A Small Orange is far from being perfect. However, if you are looking for a web host that is honest, engages in ethical business practices, offers reliable hosting servers and excellent for installing scripts, then give A Small Orange a try.
If you do not plan on doing anything fancy, I would recommend A Small Orange. However, if you are looking for a web host that offers unlimited features; then go with a web hosting like InMotion Hosting.
